Our New Beginnings in the Fraser Valley

Our relocation on Saturday from Oliver BC to Abbotsford went well. The day was cloudy and rainy for the most part. We saw a few glimpses of snow in the mountain peaks and were glad it was higher than where we needed to travel. New friends that we met in Oliver told us that they might meet us in Abbotsford again. They arrived Sunday afternoon and told us about their travels. They had decided to stop Saturday night at a lodge in Manning Park and when they wanted to resume their travels Sunday morning they were greeted with 3" of snow and roads that were impassable till the snow plough cleared them. Even after the roads were cleared they travelled very slowly (30 km/hr) till they got to lower elevations and clear roads. We are thankful for having done our travels the day before the snow.

Lots of ups and downs with mountain travel - no need for cruise control here.

Our new location is at Fraser Valley Gleaners, Abbotsford BC which is a new community to us and will give us different places to explore in the next few weeks. Thanks to our hosts we got a package of maps and tourist information for the area.

This is our work place at Fraser Valley Gleaners. Our work is similar to what we did in Oliver during the four weeks in October. We are only working Mon - Fri 8:30 till noon and no Saturdays. We are familiar with most of the work . The facilities are larger and of course have more volunteers, 50 or more each day. It is a challenge to even remember a few names later in the week.

With mostly seniors here it is a pleasure to have school age students occasionally come join us.

Eight pan scraping stations are needed to remove product from the previous days work. Note the filled barrels in the background.

This is the place we call home for the month of November.

Our distant view from the breakfast table. During our first week we had one day of sunshine and six days of cloud and rain.

Our free afternoons gives us time to explore. Abbotsford is called "City in the Country" so therefore has many farm markets. We have explored a few and done some shopping there. We have been driving around to familiarize ourselves with the area and then try to find our way back without the GPS. It is interesting how in your mind you are heading east and then realize you are actually going west when you go by a familiar landmark. Curved roads and no sun can sure mess you up.

We enjoyed a weekend with sister Marlene in Vancouver.

Enjoying the activity along False Creek.
