Our Monday to Wednesday work was a change from our normal Hattiesburg home repairs. Our group was asked by the MDS head office personnel to repair a home that was built five years ago by the Partnership Home Programs. This home in McNeil MS has issues with the plywood floor rotting due to excess moisture in the crawl space. Our team was instructed to install a new 3/4" plywood floor with vinyl tiles throughout the house. That meant moving or removing clothes, furniture and appliances, trimming doors and replacing the baseboard. The work and the daily commute of one hour each way went better than expected and were done in three days instead of the expected four days.
The "Yucky Lady" determined to keep herself clean while painting.
The rented storage unit helped with having a dry place to put furniture and clothes.
To finish off our week, our director took on a job of installing rug in one room of a house. This home, which was damaged in the tornado was in a nice neighborhood compared to where we normally have worked. The young single woman who lives here is dealing with Lupus and therefore qualified to receive assistance. The job was understated by the R3SM person. What this home needed was 2 rooms, a stairway, a hall with numerous doorways. That was much more than what could be done in a day. So only the living room was done for the time being which included moving furniture and a baby grand piano.
Our fellow Manitoba crew members Ken and Eva left for home Thursday and emailed at the end of Thursday saying they had stopped in Sikeston, Missouri and would proceed when roads were passible.
On Friday morning we departed from the MDS site at Okatoma RV Resort and headed southeast towards the warmer temps and away from the cold that was approaching from the northwest. After a 1/2 day drive we did some shopping at an outlet mall in Foley, AL. Travels Saturday got us to Perry, FL and that's where we will leave you! We have tickets to fly home from Tampa on Tuesday in order to be home for Christmas.
As we travelled southeast of Hattiesburg on Hwy. 98 we encountered 2 mobile Corp of Engineers Command posts heading our way. Soon thereafter we saw groups of power company boom trucks and tree trimming trucks too. After awhile we concluded that these trucks were headed northwest in response to aid in restoring power somewhere. In a span of 3 hours we are sure we saw at least 100 units owned by various companies.
Hope to post again about our Florida adventures mid January. Merry Christmas.
