Saying Goodbye to Clients and Co-workers - Week 8

Today, Thursday we finished our eight week term with Mennonite Disaster Service here in New Iberia, LA. We have enjoyed helping to make improvements in homes and lives of five clients.

Ms Hazel received help with laminate flooring and ramps to exit the rear of her home. A new oven and range hood were also much appreciated. To show us her appreciation she treated our group to chicken dinner one day and donuts for coffee break another day.

In a matter of four days Ms Lena's house received a facelift which included two ceilings redone with drywall, eleven new windows, two new appliances and brightening up with paint. At this home we received two lunch meals from the homeowners children and also one meal of Gumbo from the son of last years client.

On our drive to the job sites we have been passing by these former plantation worker houses. There are approximately thirty of these small houses in a one block area. These houses are about 10 to 12 feet wide and about 30 feet long (commonly called shotgun houses). We are told they rent for $400 per month. There are some new homes that have been built in the community and the mortgage payment would be no more than many people pay for rent, but they do not qualify because of their poor credit rating.

We feel that we have been blessed by having the opportunity to serve here in this very needy community.

Leaving is an emotional time as we say goodbye to the new friends we have made here, but we also look forward to time with our family at home.

Depending on whether we find interesting items to share with you as we travel during the next few days, our next blog post will only be in mid January. Thanks for reading.
