Jim spent three days at the Hoof N' Horns Farm Sanctuary and Annette joined him for two of those days. The fifty minute ride to this place included city, interstate, scenic rural roads and gravel/sand trail. The scenic part was through a portion of Saguaro National Park.
The mobile home we came to repair is surrounded by a menagerie of animals, some of which have been given sanctuary from abusive owners. We were surrounded by the smells and sounds of roosters, goats, cows and horses which were penned only a short distance from the home. Also present were a cat, six little dogs indoors and two large mutts outside.
This yard was messy but if you could overlook the close-up you saw the great views of the cactus covered mountains in the distance.
These tomatoes were offered to the homeowner and she thought she was getting a half-ton load of them, but instead got a semi-truck of tomatoes to feed to her animals.
The lady homeowner had lived here for 20 years and had surrounded her place with trees, shrubs and vines. These vines covered a 20 foot section of the wall and with the mobile home not having an overhang the moisture soaked into the exterior woodchip sheeting and rotting it. We pulled off the old and put on new ranch-wall sheeting.
A morning sunrise photo of the Catalina Mountains as seen from our door as we went to work.
This rotten porch was torn apart and rebuilt with pressure treated wood.
On Friday Jim and I went to a nearby open pit working copper mine. They offered a 1 hour bus tour to the see the mine in operation. On our tour we saw how copper ore is mined in the open pit and then at the center we saw how it is processed in the mill to extract the copper minerals. (click photo to enlarge)
This retired haul truck carried 170 tons of material whereas the trucks they use now carry 400 tons.
This old shovel could hold a car, whereas the current shovels can hold four cars side by side and can fill a rock truck in three scoops.
