Vacationing in the Sunny South

For the last two weeks we have camped at the following three state parks, Lockhart, Palmetto, and Lake Texana. At each of these places we hiked trails and explored the campground. By our pictures you can tell we found a variety of feathered and furry creatures. Other activities have included shopping, gospel sing and church attendance in a variety of communities. It has become easier to attend new churches because we did that with MDS.

Bird watching from the campsite. Here we saw the unnamed butterflies and also heard the call of Barred Owl.

Hiking at Palmetto State Park along the banks of the San Marcos River.

While in the Rio Grande Valley we stayed at Citrus RV Park from which we did numerous day trips. One day we spent at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park which is the headquarters of the World Birding Center. Here we saw numerous birds found no where else except in south Texas and Mexico.

The Kiskadee.

The Green Jay.

The city of McAllen runs a former mansion, Quinta Mazatlan as a birding center with nature trails, feeders and water features to attract birds.

The Altamira Oriole.

Javelina below the bird feeders at Bentsen-Rio.

A friendly squirrel eager to pose.

Spring arrives in Texas.

From a hiking trail in a state park we could look across the Rio Grande River into Mexico.

Hidalgo is a town on the banks of the Rio Grande River where we saw them erecting this wall “The Iron Curtain” to keep out illegals.

Some of the last of the seasons grapefruit are on a tree next to our camper. We have enjoyed these mouth-watering grapefruit.
