Florida's January Winter with 80 F. Highs

The winding down hill road creates a picturesque welcome to Lakewood Retreat office, and makes for a challenging walk.

Jim has been enjoying his morning walk to work at the cabin. The sighting of a sandhill crane, red-shouldered hawk or pileated woodpecker has been rewarding.

The view from the lake side of Redwing/Tanager cabin displays the spanish moss that is very prevalent.

The work this week has mainly been in Redwing with the removal of an old chimney, updating wiring, and applying new panelling. As with any southern renovation we are not surprised to find critters in the walls like carpenter ants and cockroaches.

Gerry found his niche in the workshop routing camp signs, a good sit-down job while he awaits his hip surgery.

Annette started her week with helping in the removal of ceramic tile in two cabins, that had been behind woodstoves that had already been removed. She then worked on the "bush whacking team" of Dorothy, Karen, Agnes as they cut out dry palmetto branches and cut back green palmettos to open up driveways and roadways. She ended off the week by staining panelling that the guys will use in the Tanager cabin renovation.

Sunset at the lakeside chapel.

Friday we enjoyed a few cool and breezy hours at Honeymoon Island State Park, one of Florida's barrier islands. Here we hiked a trail and saw numerous Osprey and nests. The island got it's name in 1939 when the developer purchased the island and held a contest for newly married couples. The winners of the contest would stay in thatched bungalows in sunny Florida for a two week "honeymoon" giving the island it's name. The thatched bungalows have been replaced by more modern dwellings.

Wow, what a week it has been. Lots of Florida sunshine and fresh air.
Lov'n it!
