The Trip South

Our travels south started Friday January 21 in very cold and snowy conditions. By the time we reached Morris it was clear to us that we should return home and try again when conditions improved. So on Saturday morning things had settled down and we were blessed with sunshine all morning and favorable North winds. Road conditions were great till South Dakota where we had ground drifting. At the end of our day as we approached Sioux City, Iowa snow started to make the drive more difficult.
When we checked road and weather conditions Sunday morning it showed completely snow covered and slippery roads till Kansas City. We waited till 10:00 o'clock for highway crews to do their work and then set off under sunny skies. The I-29 in Iowa was good with occasional portions being snow packed, but as we hit Missouri road conditions became less favorable. We saw many snowplows out clearing the eight inch snow fall from overnight and numerous vehicles still in the ditch. Because road conditions were better going Southwest than East to St. Louis as we had planned, we headed for Oklahoma.

By the third night on the road we stayed in our RV at Hugo Lake State Park in Southern Oklahoma. We had the whole campground to ourselves. From this point in our travels we kept our days to four or five hours driving and enjoyed each of the state parks in Texas and Mississippi that we stayed at. This gave Jim some time to figure out why the water did not run to the water heater and kitchen faucet. It turned out that his winterization wasn't the best and sections of pipe must have been frozen.

We arrived at the MDS site Saturday morning and enjoyed our first day with highs of 72F. Isn't the campground's name appropriate for our destination? All seven couples arrived safely by Saturday evening.
