Ten Thousand Villages, New Hamburg, ON

We volunteered with Ten Thousand Villages from Oct. 2 to Dec. 7/06 in New Hamburg. TTV provides vital, fair income to Third World people by selling their handicrafts and telling their story in North America. TTV works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. This income helps pay for food, education, health care and housing. TTV is a nonprofit program of Mennonite Central Committee.

Annette spent most of her time picking orders. Picking is an all day workout of walking, bending, climbing ladders and pushing a cart. She also packed all the orders she picked. These were usually sent by courier or skidded.

Jim worked mostly in the loading dock area where he did a variety of tasks like unloading containers from overseas, checking and counting items. He also worked in the pricing room and delivered products to stores and festival sales in the area.
