The week started off with our whole crew having received their instructions from our director how to complete this home with most of the workers required in the kitchen area. As Jim and Annette started on the floor covering on one end, Dick and Kathy worked on the countertops on the other end. Jan and Suzette stained and varnished the quarter round while Andre and Bob put in the bathroom flooring.
Jim precut the pieces of flooring in the carport area.
The cleaned and varnished cabinet doors looked great with the new counter top. Jan's handi-work on cleaning hinges and handles put a new gleam to the cabinets.
Bob finished off the room with adding the quarter round.
Ms. Beulah with three of her six grandchildren. The daily connection with these children made Annette miss her grandkids all the more.
Tuesday to Thursday were the demolition days at Ms Gertrude's house where ceilings and flooring were removed. By the end of Thursday the drywall was in place and the kitchen had new plywood on the floor. It must be a traumatic experience to have a gang of workers invading and tearing apart your house. Ms Gertrude was observing the new ceiling and asked about the lines between the drywall sheets, Bob told her they would be filled and added jokingly that it would be painted pink with purple polka dots.
Our group was invited to a Thursday Awards and recognition evening where MDS was presented with the above plaque for their years of service in the west end community of New Iberia. We were very impressed with the positive and energetic attitude of the people as they work at revitalizing their traditional black community. The evening ended with a "New Orleans" style brass band playing several numbers with one being "When the saints come marching in" as the people danced. Oh how I wish I could have videoed it!
