Return to Cheek, Texas

Our return trip for another term with Mennonite Disaster Service began in the morning hours
of Tuesday January 5th. This time our border crossing had a new twist as we were asked to come into the office and obtain and pay for a departure record which needs to be returned as we leave the country.

We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over North Dakota. The roads in North and South Dakota were dry, making for a pleasant driving day. Conditions could not have been better for this time of year.

After watching the weather forecast at our night stop in Sioux City, Iowa we realized we should make an early start the next morning in order to stay ahead of the storm system approaching.

On Wednesday morning the roads already had a small layer of snow making travel more stressful with limited visibility.

By late morning as we neared Kansas City, Missouri road conditions improved. We were able to stay ahead of the stormy weather the rest of the day.

Northern Oklahoma still had some snow on the ground. While filling up in Pryor, OK a local commented that they had had eleven inches of snow during the Christmas week. At our Wednesday night stop we heard more warning of freezing rain and high windchill overnight, causing us to delay our next morning departure till about 9:00 a.m. With sunshine and road crews working hard our drive turned out to be very good.

We arrived safely at our Beaumont, TX destination. The balmy conditions we had left in November were no longer here. Instead we experienced the coldest winter weather folks around here have had in the last 10 years. The water lines to our RV's don't work well with night time lows of -5 celcius.
Our MDS crew has all arrived safely and are ready to begin work on Monday. We plan to post again in a week.
